When it comes to essay writing, the most common graphic organizers are webs, mind maps, and concept maps. Webbing is a great way to see how various topics are interrelated. This graphic organizer is particularly useful during the brainstorming step of the writing process. A web can sometimes get a bit messy.

Students organize their ideas by filling out a graphic organizer. Students use information from their graphic organizer to write a rough draft. Students write on “Rough draft paper” which leaves plenty of space for editing marks. Students read over their rough drafts and look for ways to improve their essay.

Although these graphic organizers are designed specifically for journalism students, they would also be appropriate for other types of expository writing. Here are just a few organizers for poetry. I am planning MUCH MORE for poetry that I hope to have up very shortly.
